ABSTRACT

THE INFLUENCE OF COST EFFICIENCY ON BUSINESS COMPETITIVENESS

This research explores the influence of cost efficiency on business competitiveness, focusing on: (1) the relationship between cost efficiency and competitive advantage; (2) the strategies for achieving cost efficiency; (3) the challenges in maintaining cost efficiency. A survey design is justified for this study to gather broad, quantitative data. Using Taro Yamane's formula, a sample size of 310 respondents from Port Harcourt is selected, representing a mix of industries. A manufacturing firm is chosen as the case study due to the significant impact of cost efficiency on its competitiveness. The survey instrument has a reliability coefficient score of 0.87. Findings show that businesses that achieve high levels of cost efficiency gain a competitive advantage by offering lower prices or higher margins. Techniques such as process optimization, lean management, and technology adoption are highlighted. It is recommended that businesses continuously seek ways to improve cost efficiency, invest in training for staff, and leverage technology to streamline operations and reduce costs.
